The end of season Spokane Youth Sports softball tournament, composed of more than 30 girls softball teams, ages 8-17, is expected to draw more than 1000 people.

Information on organ, tissue and cornea donation will be available. Local transplant recipients who received the "gift of life" will be on-site to answer questions regarding donation. In addition, information about joining the organ & tissue donation registry and information about wishes for children with life threatening illnesses will be also offered at the event.

The event is coordinated by four local non-profit organizations including the Northwest Lions Eye Bank, the Living Legacy Foundation at LifeCenter Northwest, The Wishing Star Foundation, and Spokane Youth Sports Association.

The tournament is named in honor of Krista L. Baker, a Spokane native and former Wish Child, who at age 20, died of cystic fibrosis while awaiting a double lung transplant. Though denied her hope for a life-saving transplant, Krista made her preference known to her family to become a cornea donor. Within four days,
two young men in the State of Washington received the gift of improved sight.

In Eastern Washington alone the N.W. Lion’s Eye Bank provide the "gift of sight" to over 100 people every year. Currently more than 1200 people are waiting for life-saving transplants in our region. More than half these people, like Krista, will die waiting due to the shortage of donated organs. There are three ways you
can become an organ, tissue, and cornea donor:

  1. Register online at www.livinglegacyregistry.org
  2. Fill out a registry card
  3. Says "yes" to organ donation when you renew your driver’s license.
